Friday bins on Christmas Day go out on Sunday 27 December; New Year's Day bins move to Saturday 2 January. Every other day stays the same across North Tyneside.

Only two collection days move in North Tyneside this Christmas, and both are Fridays. If your bin normally goes on a Friday, the Christmas Day round is collected on Sunday 27 December, and the New Year’s Day round on Saturday 2 January 2027. Every other day of the week stays as it is.

North Tyneside Council has already published this, which is unusually early. It is on the council’s bank holiday bin collections page, which says that if your day is not listed, nothing changes.

The quick answer

  • Friday 25 December collections move to Sunday 27 December.
  • Friday 1 January 2027 collections move to Saturday 2 January 2027.
  • Monday to Thursday collections do not change, including Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December) and New Year’s Eve (Thursday 31 December).

The revised dates in full

Your usual collection Your Christmas or New Year collection
Friday 25 December 2026 (Christmas Day) Sunday 27 December 2026
Friday 1 January 2027 (New Year’s Day) Saturday 2 January 2027

That is the whole list the council gives. It covers Whitley Bay, Monkseaton, Cullercoats, Tynemouth, North Shields, Wallsend, Shiremoor, Killingworth and the rest of the borough, because North Tyneside runs one schedule for every address.

What about Boxing Day?

Boxing Day falls on a Saturday this year, so the bank holiday moves to a substitute day, Monday 28 December, as National Rail’s Christmas summary notes. The council’s page lists no change for that week beyond Christmas Day itself, so a Monday bin goes out on Monday 28 December as normal. North Tyneside’s standing rule is that collections are not affected by bank holidays except at Christmas and New Year, and this year that means the two Fridays only.

Which bin is which

If you have just moved to the coast, the colours are the opposite of most of England: the grey bin is recycling and the green bin is general waste. The brown garden waste bin is a paid subscription and the season has ended by Christmas. Our Whitley Bay bin collection days page has the full rules, the food waste caddy rollout and the bulky waste prices.

To find your own day, use the council’s bin collection day checker.

Extra rubbish and the tip over Christmas

For anything that will not fit in the bins, the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Wallsend Road, North Shields, NE29 7SH opens 8am to 8pm every day except Christmas Day, according to the council’s opening times page. The site is appointment-only, so book a slot before you go. Charges for DIY waste and the vehicle rules are on our bin days page.

What is still to be confirmed

Nothing on the dates: the council has published them. What the council has not yet said is anything about real Christmas tree collections for 2026 or whether a missed Friday round will be caught up on a different day if the weather stops the Sunday crews. We will check the council’s pages again in early December and update this page. If you are also planning journeys over the holidays, see Whitley Bay Christmas travel for Metro and bus changes.
