The good news is that it runs every 12 minutes through the day and reaches central Newcastle in under half an hour. The catch is the ticket machine: pay cash-style at the machine and a single to town is £5.10, while the same journey on Pop pay as you go is £2.50. Whitley Bay sits on the Metro’s coast loop between St James and South Shields, so trains from the same island platform reach Newcastle two ways round. Heading inland (towards South Shields on the timetable), you reach Haymarket in 24 minutes and Central Station in 28. Heading along the coast through North Shields (towards St James), it is 27 minutes to Monument and 29 to St James (Travel North East, Whitley Bay station, Monument station). Either way, the city centre is under half an hour.
Trains run every 12 minutes each way on weekdays through the day, dropping to every 15 minutes in the evening and on Sunday daytimes (Travel North East). You do not plan around a timetable so much as walk to Station Square and wait a few minutes.
First and last trains
From the published weekday timetable for Whitley Bay (Travel North East):
- First train towards Newcastle (via the coast): 05:24 on weekdays.
- Last through train to Monument: 23:53 on weekdays. A 00:08 service runs but terminates at Manors, one stop short of Monument.
- On Saturdays the last through train to Monument leaves at 23:23; the 23:38 and 23:53 terminate at Manors.
- Towards South Shields, the first weekday train is 05:41 and the last 00:10, terminating at Longbenton.
What it means for you: a night out in Newcastle works on the Metro, but the hard deadline is just before midnight, and on Saturdays it is earlier than you probably assume. Check the last through train for the week you travel, especially during engineering work.
What it costs in 2026
Whitley Bay is in fare Zone C and central Newcastle in Zone A, so a trip to town is an all-zones journey. The gap between the ways of paying is wide (Metro single fares, Pop pay as you go, day tickets):

What it means for you: get a Pop card. A commuter paying at the machine spends £10.20 a day on singles; the same two journeys on Pop pay as you go cost £5.00 because the daily cap kicks in. The card is free to order online and comes with a £5 starting balance, and Android users can add Pop pay as you go to Google Wallet instead (Pop pay as you go).
Season tickets
For five-day-a-week commuting, the season beats the cap. The three-zone season covering Whitley Bay to Newcastle costs £28.10 a week, £103.00 for four weeks or £947.00 a year, and it also covers the Shields Ferry and local rail between Newcastle and Sunderland (Metro season tickets). The trains themselves
The fleet is new. Stadler’s Class 555 trains replaced the entire 1980 fleet in a £362 million programme, the biggest in the Metro’s history, with the first entering service in December 2024 and delivery of all 46 now complete (Nexus, A new Metro fleet). They carry linear seating, charging points, air conditioning and a sliding step at every door, which ended the old scramble over the platform gap.
Getting to London from Whitley Bay
There is no direct coast-to-capital train; the route is Metro to Newcastle Central Station (28 minutes), then the East Coast Main Line. Direct trains to London King’s Cross run roughly three times an hour for most of the day, with the fastest at 2 hours 46 minutes and typical services just over three hours (traintimes.org.uk, live National Rail data). In practice Whitley Bay to central London is around three and a half hours door to door.
On fares, the spread is wide: on the days we checked, Advance singles started at £66.70 off-peak, peak-morning Advances ran from around £137.90, and a walk-up Anytime single was £200.80 (traintimes.org.uk). The budget option is Lumo, which runs five direct London services a day from Newcastle with advance fares from around £25.90 when released (Lumo). Book ahead and travel off-peak; the same seat can cost three times as much bought on the day.
The station itself
Whitley Bay station on Station Square, with its 1910 portico and clock tower, has a free 76-space public car park off Station Square at Victoria Terrace, run by North Tyneside Council, plus four accessible bays by the taxi rank and 16 cycle spaces in pods on both sides of the station (Travel North East).
